Salines de la Tancada (The old Sant Antoni Salt Flats)

La Tancada Salt Flats particularities
punto
The old Sant Antoni Salt Flats are placed among la Tancada lagoon and the Alfacs Bay. This special landscape is characterized by saline soils that determine the presence of a perfectly adapted vegetation, where dominates the "sosar", plant formation found on clay soils in the area behind the dunes, at the very edge ofthe beach and under the direct influence of the sea. Marine seepage into the ground and storms make these soils remain wet or flooded most of the year, although summer can form salt crusts on the surface. In this environment dominated by halophytic plants, both salt and water that accumulate in their tissues, such as those that excrete salt.

In this space are  12 different habitats, including, lakes and salt plains that surround them are considered priority conservation habitats. This set of natural environments is an important landscape and ecological unit of the Ebro Delta for the high biodiversity of organisms within it.

La Tancada ecological value
punto
The Ebro Delta is considered an area of international importance for conservation of salt lakes and steppes in Europe, as many species of the genus Limonium and the "sosa de flor". The latter has a distribution Saharan Africa and in Europe only found in the Delta and some Greek islands. In the "sosales" also raise various species of endangered birds such as the Kentish Plover, the Collared Pratincole and the Little Tern.

By connecting the "sosars" with the sea, hydrological conditions favor the attendance of waterfowl throughout the year, csuch as flamingos, gulls, terns and waders. During the migratory and wintering, numerous flocks feed and rest in the old heaters of the salt flats. It also highlights the presence of one of the main population of "fartet", in the Delta, a small fish endemic to the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula which is adapted to high salinity conditions, and is in danger of extinction. The old salt flats is also an important feeding area, as they have a high production of aquatic invertebrates that is exploited by  Flamingos, Black-tailed Godwits and several species of Sandpipers.

Prospects for recovery
punto
This natural area (part of which was transformed into a farm in the late 80s) is currently owned by the CatalunyaCaixa Obra Social and is being recovered thanks to the project LIFE + ∆-LAGOON (2010-2014).
