L'Alfacada lagoon

L’Alfacada historical situation
L'Alfacada lagoon was formed by sediment supply from the old Ebro's river mouth (braç de Migjorn) and the growth of a beach front that closed the coastal water body. As a result of the intense human activity, especially the transformation of many wetlands in rice fields during the nineteenth and twentieth century, the lagoon original surface was reduced by 80%. At the end of the 90s, the implementation of the European Union environmental measures allowed the recovery of 48 ha of rice fields in wetlands, and today the lake occupies 195 ha.

L’Alfacada ecological value
It represents an important landscape and ecological unit in the Ebro delta, because it supports a rich biodiversity in a relatively small area and is one of the most important sites for nesting birds, thanks to the existence of different types of habitats in terms of salinity and the degree of flooding, marsh brackish, salinity and hypersalinity. It is an especially favorable habitat for great bittern (Botaurus stellaris), Ardeidae who regularly use this lagoon, both during the migratory and in the winter time.
Featured Birds in l’Alfacada
  • The Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio)
  • The Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus)
  • The Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis)
  • The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
  • The Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina)
  • The Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus)
  • The Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida)
  • Diferent species of warblers (Acrocephalus sp.)
  • The Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus subsp. witherbyi), threatened subespecies
  • The Eurasian Bittern (Botaurus stellaris)

Prospects for recovery
The year 2004, the Obra Social of CatalunyaCaixa bought 176 ha of the property where l’Alfacada is placed, with the aim of preserving its natural values and to recover the full extent of the original habitats. The implementation of the LIFE + ∆-LAGOON project, 50 ha of coastal lagoon will be recovered before 2014, which means, so far, the largest increase in this type of habitat in the Delta del Ebro.
